Self-Driving Cars Coming to Connecticut
AAA Applauds Governor’s Signing of Autonomous Vehicles Bill

Having testified in support of the measure, AAA is applauding the Governor’s signing today of a bill that allows for the testing of self-driving cars in Connecticut, promoting innovation with an eye toward safety – a primary concern for consumers.

“Support of autonomous vehicle testing puts Connecticut on the map with other forward-thinking states that want to embrace the new technology, without compromising consumer safety” says Amy Parmenter, spokesperson for AAA in Greater Hartford. “Like our lawmakers, AAA is excited about the possibilities, but insistent that we proceed with caution”.

A recent AAA poll of Connecticut drivers indicates that most believe they will be riding in self-driving cars within 10 years but that same poll found that Connecticut drivers have 2 significant concerns:

1.When Connecticut begins testing autonomous vehicles, more than 80 percent of those surveyed think that local and state governments should inform the public about when and where that testing will occur.
2.More than 80 percent of drivers surveyed also expressed concern about the security of data shared by autonomous vehicles.

The legislation signed by the Governor is Senate Bill 260An Act Concerning Autonomous Vehicles. See AAA testimony in support of the bill here).

As the advocacy organization for all motorists and everyone with whom they share the road, AAA will continue to represent consumers’ interests as Connecticut explores this new technology.
